about

Paul started writing Toothpaste and Oranges a couple of months before aspirin moved from Melbourne to London and it captures the transient feeling of change and leaving things behind. Before they left, aspirin had had a massive couple of years, both musically - constant touring and the release of three well-received EPs - and personally - Paul tragically losing his brother Arun, also a close friend of the band and a musical accomplice on Melbourne’s Brunswick Street scene.

The song was both a physical and musical departure for aspirin, capturing the grief, chaos and uncertainty of the time while giving a not-so-subtle nod to one of the Aussie indie bands they were listening to at the time, Gaslight Radio. They eventually recorded it in London as a demo for London Records and lip-synched it on prime time UK TV, but it was never released before aspirin called it quits in late ‘99.
