about

Duncan – drums, vocals Jo-Anne – guitar, vocals Kerrie Anne – bass, vocals Mick – guitar, vocals

Recorded by Craig McArthur at Whirled May 1995

“Holocene formed in Melbourne in 1992, when Kerrie (ex Autohaze) and Jo-Anne (ex The Squad/Ripe) got together to make noisy, melodic pop. Mick (ex The Beekeepers, Perth) and Duncan (ex The Squad) soon rounded out the lineup, and Holocene was born, the band name referencing an era of geological evolution.
Three EPs were released by Shock Records: 'Pop Astronauts' (the launch of which broke the house attendance record at Fitzroy's Evelyn Hotel), 'Flying' and 'Guitarbarella'. After that came an album, 'Spurr', recorded and mixed with Bob Weston (Shellac) at Sing Sing studios in Richmond.
Further demos were recorded, but Mick and Duncan decided to leave the group.
Jo and Kerrie continued Holocene with new recruit guitarist John Baxter (ex Porcelain Jane), but finding a permanent full-time drummer proved elusive and ultimately too tough.
A final show took place at The Punters Club, Fitzroy. A giveaway cassette for attendees contained unreleased demos from both Holocene lineups. Golden Lion was one of the tracks on that cassette, recorded at the first lineup’s final session.

The song was inspired in part by speculating on a complex ‘imaginary friend’ relationship, superimposed on a real-life historic scenario.”
