“This song represents the heavier side of the Calling - here in almost power-three-piece mode. The song ‘Lost at Sea’ combined our love of the buzzsaw power-pop-punk of Hüsker Dü with the dark brooding heavy Rickenbacker chordage of the Smithereens. The song was recorded with Craig McArthur at his Whirled Records studio in 1989, and later pressed at the band’s own expense as a vinyl single double A-side uneasily paired with a jangly candy-pop song called “She Said”. Unfortunately the vinyl single was never released nor sold in shops. Perhaps this was because of genre-clash and the unresolved tension in musical direction: the other side of the Calling was quite different influenced equally but the Church and the waves of indie pop bands from the UK in the late 80s. However the main reason for never selling or releasing the single was 'bad timing': when we tried to sell the single to record shops they were intent on transitioning completely to CDs and even indie record shops and had stopped accepting vinyl - and certainly not from self-releasing indie bands!”
